There are two answers to this question: yes and no. Germany is one of the most organised countries in the world, with drivers that understand the importance of driving in the modern society, and that in order to keep your right to drive you have to respect and protect all other participants to the traffic. No matter the car brand one is driving, they will almost never flash you to change lanes when you’re overtaking, they will not cut you off, nor rush you to drive over the speed limit. Even when you stop to speak with someone in the middle of the road, they will most probably not say anything, just waiting peacefully for you to end the conversation and be on your way; they think there must be a serious reason for you stopping and temporarily blocking the traffic. No harm done. Germans are calm and respectful. This is why you rarely see accidents in Germany. If there is one, it is a high probability that at least one driver wasn’t German. Germany is by far the best country to drive in.
Coming back to speed limits, yes, there are speed limitations on the German motorways. Autobahn means motorway, highway, freeway, etc.. You have to obey the speed limits, if you don’t want to be issued with huge fines. If you have an anti-radar device in your vehicle, like me (it came with the car), it won’t work because the German traffic police use lasers to measure your speed from afar. Lasers do not trigger your anti-radar. If they want to catch you, they will, and there is nothing you can do to avoid it if you’re speeding in a restricted area. The top speed restriction is 130 km/h. That’s roughly 80 mph. Now here is the fun part. When you see the sign for “end of all restrictions”, if you have a supersonic vehicle, you can legally drive it with supersonic speed and beyond, as long as you’re not endangering any lives. Yes, you can drive with any speed. During a European holiday in 2018 I was constantly driving at 125 mph in my flip-flops. I think my Toyota is limited, as it didn’t go more that that. For warranty purposes, that’s ok. The German Autobahn is so awesome, that you will be able to drive for hundreds of miles without having to take any exit. To give you an example, as we were heading to Dover, at one point I wanted to see how much I could drive without touching the pedals. I’ve engaged the cruise control, and for 150 miles my feet just relaxed. I swear I did not touch any pedals. Everyone in the car was amazed I could pull that off.
Enjoy the Autobahn, respect the speed limits.
